Playas del Coco - Climate - Costa Rica

Playas Del Coco is the epitome of everything one looks for in Costa Rica. Literally translated into “Coconut Beach”, Playas del Coco is aptly named, with an abundance of palm trees. The horseshoe shaped bay laps gently onto golden sands mere feet from the town itself, ideal for swimming, saving the big waves for Witch’s Rock and Ollie’s Point.

For those who love to party, Playas del Coco boasts vibrant nightlife, especially Wednesdays and Thursdays, where ladies drink for free. However, for those seeking a more peaceful vacation, it is easy to escape the crowds and find more mellow restaurants, or just kick back in a comfortable condo until your next surf. During the day, the opportunities for adventure are limitless.

We can easily arrange day tours for diving, snorkeling, to volcanoes, zip-lining and deep-sea fishing, as well as countless waterfalls and nature tours. Coco is a productive fishing village, and if you take your catch to one of the many seafood restaurants, the chef will gladly fry it up for you. The abundance of wildlife, such as monkeys, lizards, racoons, coatis, anteaters, and a variety of exotic birds make any walk through the forest or on the beach an opportunity to observe these creatures in their natural habitat. If you come at the right time (September – October) you might even witness an arribada, the mass egg- laying of sea turtles.

Deep Blue Barrels surfing in Costa RicaThe seasons in Costa Rica differ from those in North America. November to April is the high season, or summer. The weather is gorgeous, with no rain, and the tourism flow is heavy. This is also the popular time to surf Witch’s Rock due to the consistent off-shore wind flowing from Lake Nicaragua all day long. From May to August is the low season which is the Costa Rican winter. It can rain occasionally, and the North American summer causes the tourism to slow considerably. This is a beautiful time of year to visit due to perfect temperatures, less tourists and ability to see more of the local flora. The wind is usually off-shore in the mornings, but can last all day. This may be the optimal time to plan your Witch’s trip to ensure you and your friends are the only surfers in the water. In September and October, the “green season”, the rain is nearly constant, giving the plants an opportunity to flourish before the next dry season. This is not so appealing for soaking up the sun, however the rain derives the biggest swells of the year. Most secluded breaks are going bananas and are empty at this time of year…
